Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra
Yariv Aloni, Music Director
A concert for Springtime.
Kodàly’s Dances of Galànta are based on the folk music of Galànta, a town that was part of Hungary, then part of Czechoslovakia, now part of Slovakia, but always with its tradition of lively music.
Adam Dobres, the Victoria guitarist, needs no introduction in Sooke. The premiere of this new work, Freda’s Journey Suite is something to look forward to.
Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony is perhaps his most popular work, yet it is still shrouded in mystery.
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8, in B minor (Unfinished)
ADAM DOBRES Freda’s Journey Suite (premiere)
KODÀLY Dances of Galànta
Adam Dobres needs no introduction to Sooke, Victoria or Western Canada. He is a virtuoso guitarist, proficient in many genres from folk to pop, Celtic and Western. He is also an accomplished composer with several albums to his name. Freda’s Journey Suite celebrates his great-grandmother Freda, who travelled to Canada from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.
Dobres says, "I’m deeply honoured and grateful for the opportunity to perform this composition in my hometown of Sooke. It honours the courageous journey my great-grandmother took as a 14-year-old girl, fleeing hardship to start a new life. Through the power of music, I carry forward my great-grandmother’s journey and legacy.
The orchestration of Freda’s Journey is by Adrian Dolan, another familiar name in Sooke. Dolan, who plays violin among other instruments, performed with Norman Nelson and played with the Sooke Philharmonic and now works as a musician, arranger and producer. You can access the solo guitar version of this work on Adam Dobres’ website.
Also on the program are Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, his most famous romantic work yet still shrouded in mystery, and Kodály’s exciting and wild Dances of Galánta, featuring Hungarian folk dance tunes.
This will be an exciting concert that we urge you not to miss!
